Master your mind – don’t be its slave!

shutterstock_445762363It is far easier to bring about changes of habit from the subconscious mind into our conscious behaviour than it is to make conscious decisions for behaviours to operate as new habits by willing them to take root in the subconscious. Now before you say, “what on earth did all that mean?”, when you realise that your entire consciousness is made up of 10% as your conscious mind, with the remaining 90% as your subconscious, you’ll realise why habits are so difficult to shift.

Unless we learn how to tap into our subconscious in order to use a greater proportion of the mind automatically, we never actually make any life-long changes that stick. A bit of a blow to those of us relying on willpower alone to get things done! You see, I’m afraid that willpower lives only in the conscious mind, so if you’re having a tough battle with something not working in your life right now, it’s little wonder as this 10:90 ratio leads to our securing very poor odds!

The subconscious mind stores all our long term memories, our habits, our beliefs and everything else we have experienced through our senses, all located here in a highly organised fashion, and therefore easily retrievable when we learn how to use it properly. As we relax from the stresses of everyday life, using these stressors as catalysts, the door of the subconscious opens and we are given access to work freely with this most powerful part of the mind.

In our normal waking state, the conscious mind is dominant and the subconscious is secondary, however, the latter is the part that is always in control. You are not telling your heart to pump blood, or your lungs to breathe – these are all happening outside of your awareness, just like your habits, your conditioned beliefs and anything else you consider to be second nature. YOU are not in control!

When chatting with one another, working out a mathematical problem, or deciding on a purchase, we are working with our conscious mind. However, when engrossed in reading a novel, day-dreaming about a recent event, practising relaxation techniques or drifting off, on the edge of sleep, or just coming round waking up, we are functioning from the subconscious….and it’s in this state that the answers to all our problems suddenly appear, as if from nowhere. You must all have had moments of inspired thinking to know that this is true!

It is crucially important to understand that any suggestions given to the subconscious mind are taken in as already having been achieved by the conscious mind – so, dropping off to sleep with the TV still switched on is a no-no, not unless you want stuff permanently etched in your psyche – you really need to be careful of the rubbish you could be feeding your mind!

Advances in neuroscience mean that we can all now re-programme our minds to make any changes we wish for our transformation and personal growth.
